Alexey Alpatov

Alexey Alpatov

Alexey Alpatov was born in 1968 in Moscow. He didn’t get professional artistic education, trained painting by himself.

Nature and the city are the main characters in Alexey Alpatov’s paintings, thus is why his favorite genre is the landscape. Despite the fact that the works usually have the features of monochrome cold colors, this beautiful palette, filled the inner glow, forming his unique style. A separate chapter of Alexey Alpatov’s artworks goes with the sea theme, which the artist depicts in various states – from a serene calmness with moored boats on the coast to a night hurricane in the middle of the ocean.
Alexey Alpatov’s painting is disciplined and precise with developed color technique, and it requires cultural reception adequate to the level of its expressive devices. He thematizes color with every overtone of meaning. Alpatov is interested in playing with light and reflections in such a way which might be identified as belonging to the vocabulary of photography (although it found its place there as a result of imitating painting). The painting of Alpatov often imitates photographic visuality, more specifically the visuality of contemporary photography employing older methods, and this is especially apparent in the works executed in mixed technique. The gravitating of his palette towards various shades of gray is not a canon, but rather an imitation of different expressive cliches. On a monitor some of his series seem like gum bichromate photography which imitates painting, the blue gray of some of his landscapes can be mistaken for cyanotype, and gray with a shade of gold — for platinotype. His virtuoso handling of material, the shining of canvas or cardboard through the painted surface problematize the media of contemporary figurative image.
The paintings of his which he introduces collage into are striking in their freedom to juxtapose textures unrelated to one another and combining into an overall impression. In the early avant-garde this method would deconstruct the illusionism of a painting and signal an entirely different use of reality. The inclusion of real objects into the space of a painting would turn the painting itself into a ready-made. There’s no such goal set before Alpatov. He sets a traditional goal of creating an image. Through these techniques he solves even such goals traditionally attributed to painting, as, for example, creating aerial perspective. His illusionism is not at all intended to trick us, but rather is staggering in revealing our willingness to be tricked.
By virtue of its temperament the painting of Alexey Alpatov retains its mimetic legacy. The return to the parental picture of the world, of course impossible, resembles a nostalgic journey akin to Proust’s way towards Swann. This is a cultural gesture aware of the contemporary context which it is performed in and of its refinement in relation to it.
